T-38 Talon

The T-38 supersonic lightweight twin-jet trainer was in continuous production for the USAF under a series of contracts awarded from May 1956. It is powered by two General Electric J85-GE-5 turbojets and reproduces the flying characteristics of a supersonic operational fighter aircraft. NASA is using the T-38s as a space flight readiness trainer for astronauts and has acquired a total of 24 aircraft; the US Navy procured five T-38s from the Air Force Systems Command. Another customer was the German government, which took delivery of 46 T-38s through the USAF in 1967. The Talon has maintained consistently the best safety record of any USAF supersonic aircraft.
